Matching outfits without looking too matchy

Same cap, same smile, same pose in the family photo: for many parents, the mini-me matching look is one of the loveliest moments with their kids. You don’t have to be dressed identically from head to toe – often one shared accessory is enough. Here’s what the mini-me look is all about and how to pull it off easily with caps and beanies.

Matching outfits without looking too matchy

Who is the mini-me look for?

For everyone who likes to show they belong together. These combinations are especially popular:

Whether on the way to daycare, at the playground, on a weekend trip or on vacation: in the same style you’re instantly recognizable as a team.

How to match without looking too matchy

The worry most parents have about a shared look is that it tips over into costume. It usually does for one reason: too many identical pieces at once. Matching one thing is enough – and a cap or beanie is the easiest piece to share, because it works with almost any outfit underneath.

  • Share one piece, not the outfit. You both wear the same cap, everything else stays your own style.
  • Start with neutrals. Grey, beige, cream, navy and olive read grown-up on you and fresh on your kid.
  • Or share one accent color. Put the color on your heads and keep the rest quiet.
  • Tone on tone instead of identical. You take the darker shade, your child the lighter one from the same color family.
  • Two elements, not three. On a photo, one repeated detail reads as coordinated – three reads as staged.

The same rule works for siblings: same style, two different colors, and they look put together rather than dressed as twins.

What does mini me mean?

What does mini me mean?

“Mini me” means something like “little me”. The term goes back to the character Mini-Me from the Austin Powers films, a miniature copy of the main character. Today, mini me mostly describes kids who look like their parents – or are deliberately styled just like them.

A mini-me look is a matching look in which parent and child share the same style. Toddlers from around one year especially love wearing exactly what mom or dad wears.

The whole family in a mini-me look

You have more than one child or want to head out as a trio? Our sets of 3 include 1 ADULT cap and 2 KIDS caps in the same style. You choose both kids sizes freely – so the set also works for siblings of different ages. Want to mix styles or colors? Put together your own set with Mix & Match.

Caps in summer, beanies in winter

The mini-me look works all year round. In summer, choose from snapback, trucker, sports, performance and dad hat caps; in winter, from our beanies – these are also available as sets of 2 and sets of 3 for parents and kids.

Mini-me look with caps: how it works

Pick the right color: Choose a cap color that goes with your favorite outfits. Muted tones like grey, navy or olive go with almost anything – so the look works even with completely different clothes.

Identical style for big and small: In our sets of 2, the parent wears an ADULT cap and the child a KIDS cap in the identical style – with a minimalist design and high-quality embroidery on the back.

Let your child help choose: Which color, which style? If your child helps pick, they’ll love wearing the cap.

The right size: For snapback and performance caps, KIDS M fits a head circumference of 45–49 cm and KIDS L 49–54 cm; for trucker, sports and dad hat caps it’s 44–48 and 48–53 cm. ADULT is one size and adjustable.

You’ll find all measurements in our size chart.

The mini-me look as a gift

A matching set is a gift that really gets worn every day: for a birthday, for Father’s Day or Mother’s Day, as a gift for expecting dads or just because. The set gets unwrapped together – and worn together the very next day. You’ll find more ideas for kids aged 1 to 3 in our guide Gifts for 2-year-olds & toddlers.

Frequently asked questions

What is a matchy-matchy outfit?

Matchy-matchy means two or more people wearing the same thing – or one person wearing a single color from head to toe. For parents and kids it is also called the mini-me look. It only reads as costume when everything matches at once, so one shared piece is usually plenty.

How do you match without looking too matchy?

Keep one element in common and let the rest differ. A shared cap with two different jackets and two different pairs of shoes reads as coordinated. Identical tops, identical trousers and identical shoes read as a uniform.

From what age does the mini-me look with caps work?

Our KIDS M caps fit toddlers approx. 1–2 years, KIDS L fits kids from approx. 2 years. The safest way is to measure the head circumference – we show you how in our article Measuring kids’ head circumference.

Do parent and child have to wear the same color?

No. In the sets, style and color are identical. If you’d rather wear different colors, choose the color for each cap individually in a Mix & Match set – the shared style still visibly connects you.
